Cause and Effect Practice

We have a lot of practice to do today in the LAB.

Go to the following websites and do several different activities related to cause/effect writing. Anything that you do not finish in the LAB is for homework.

1. Read the explanation first and do the two exercises. Links are at the bottom of the page. http://lrs.ed.uiuc.edu/students/fwalters/cause.html#causeconj

Do the following questions WITH A PARTNER. It’s not necessary for you to write them down; only discuss them orally. Do not look at the answer sheet until you are done.

5. What’s the effect? http://www.k12reader.com/cause-effect/whats_the_effect.pdf
6. What’s the cause? http://www.k12reader.com/cause-effect/why_whats_the_cause.pdf

Do this activity by yourself. Write down your answers in your notebook!

After you finish identifying the cause and effect for each question, combine the two clauses/sentences to make THREE complex sentence using cause/effect conjunctions.

E.g. There was a loud boom of thunder, and my dog began to scratch the door.
Examples of complex sentence:
a) Since there was a loud boom of thunder, my dog began to scratch at the door.
b) Due to the loud boom of thunder, my dog began to scratch at the door.

c) My dog began to scratch at the door because there was a loud boom of thunder.
