Cause and Effect Practice

We have a lot of practice to do today in the LAB.

Go to the following websites and do several different activities related to cause/effect writing. Anything that you do not finish in the LAB is for homework.

1. Read the explanation first and do the two exercises. Links are at the bottom of the page. http://lrs.ed.uiuc.edu/students/fwalters/cause.html#causeconj

Do the following questions WITH A PARTNER. It’s not necessary for you to write them down; only discuss them orally. Do not look at the answer sheet until you are done.

5. What’s the effect? http://www.k12reader.com/cause-effect/whats_the_effect.pdf
6. What’s the cause? http://www.k12reader.com/cause-effect/why_whats_the_cause.pdf

Do this activity by yourself. Write down your answers in your notebook!

After you finish identifying the cause and effect for each question, combine the two clauses/sentences to make THREE complex sentence using cause/effect conjunctions.

E.g. There was a loud boom of thunder, and my dog began to scratch the door.
Examples of complex sentence:
a) Since there was a loud boom of thunder, my dog began to scratch at the door.
b) Due to the loud boom of thunder, my dog began to scratch at the door.

c) My dog began to scratch at the door because there was a loud boom of thunder.

LAB Instructions

Hi everyone,

First, go to  https://mohawkcollege.acereader.com/ and do the highlighted activities for today.

For the rest of the class, choose what you would like to do. Your options are:

1. Click on the Ultimate Speed Reader icon on the desktop and practice reading.

2. Click on the Tense Busters icon on the desktop and choose any grammar point that you would like to practice. Preferably choose a grammar point that you struggle with in writing. You should know what you struggle with based on the comments and feedback I give you on your paragraphs in class/assessments. If the grammar point is not available on Tense Busters, go on Google and search for other websites that are useful.

Let me know if you need help and I'll come around.

Answers to the Trans. and Intrans. Verbs HW and Flower Arrangement

How to arrange flowers
1. Gather the necessary materials.

2. Cut the flower stems diagonally, about an inch from the ends, using a sharp knife or garden shears.

3. Prepare the vase, bowl, box or whatever vessel you plan on using for the flower arrangement. Make sure the vessel is nice and clean, with no residue or dirt.

4. Pour the water into the vessel, and then add a single package of preservative solution. If you don't have any preservative solution, try adding a couple of drops of Clorox bleach to the water instead. If you have any closed buds and you want them to open quickly, use warm water instead of cool water.

5. Use an odd number of flowers in each layer.

6. Add the larger, more dominant flowers first. Work with a single flower type at a time. Work in a circle, placing one flower at a time around the outer edge of the container.

7. Once you have finished putting in the largest flowers, move on to the second circle, using a different variety of flower. This circle of flowers should be inside the first circle. Leave the stems slightly longer on the inner flowers. Continue to layer the flowers in this manner, one variety after another, according to the size and number of flowers in your arrangement.

8. You can add the final touches to your arrangement by inserting any greenery, leaves, berries or other decorations.
