Answers to Azaar Cause-Effect HW

I only realized now, as I was putting up the answers, that the two sets of worksheets I gave you for homework have some of the same/similar questions. Oh well. Practice makes perfect.

Below is just a quick review of the phrases we use in cause and effect sentences. All the answers to the worksheets are after this review.

Cause

Due to + noun object                     Due to the bad weather, I can’t go to the park.

Due to the fact that + S + V           Due to the fact that I lost my job, I can’t pay the bills.

Because of + noun object              Because of the hurricane, many people lost their homes.

Because + S +V           Because I have benchmark 7 in all the English skills,
                                     I can go to college.

Since                           Since I have benchmark 7 in all the English skills,
                                    I can go to college.

S + V, so S+V             I have benchmark 7 in all the English skills, so I can go to college.

Now that + S +V        Now that I have benchmark 7 in all the English Skills,
                                   I can go to college.

Effect
As a result, S + V                 I have benchmark 7 in all the English skills.
As a result, I can go to college.

Therefore, S + V                 I have benchmark 7 in all the English skills.
Therefore, I can go to college.

Because of this, S+V          I have benchmark 7 in all the English skills.
Because of this, I can go to college.

Consequently, S + V           I have benchmark 7 in all the English skills.
Consequently, I can go to college.

6. acceptable                 7. appearance      8. restricted        9. convinced       10. lead to, advantages

Studying Collocations
Answers will vary. If you need me to check any of your answers, ask me in class.
1. If I have children, I will try to prevent them from behaving badly.
* We can’t say prevent from them. This is grammatically wrong. You need an object right after the verb and before the preposition.
2. A friend of mine has been cured of cancer.
3. My children will inherit money and property from me.
* We can’t say inherit from me money. Inherit from also needs an object right after the verb and before the preposition.
4. I once lost my friend’s book, so I replaced it with a new one.
* We can’t say replaced with it. The object needs to be after the verb and before the preposition.

Summarizing
Because of genetic engineering, many scientists believe that in the future, parents will be able to design their children. Already, scientists kno how to use genetic engineering and genetic testing to determine the gender of the fetus. In the future, scientists expect to be able to identify the genes that determine most human traits, including those that affect physical appearance, intellect, and personality. When that happens, surveys show that many parents will use genetic engineering to choose desirable traits for their children. The use of genetic engineering to design children leads to some difficult moral questions, for example: Will the children of rich parents have more design advantages than the children of parents who can't afford genetic engineering? But the most important question is: Will genetic engineering change what it means to be human?
